I'm Moving to Canada!!
Calgary, Alberta to be with my girlfriend. Could some of you kind Canadians let me in on a few things, because I'm getting conflicting answers:
1. Do I need a passport to MOVE there, or just if I'm visiting?
2. I read somewhere that I need permission to send my belongings there. Is this true?
3. Can anyone send me some useful links where I can email and talk to a real person for more info? All I can find with immigration and customs has no way of personally contacting someone.
4. I don't particularly care for Hockey, will they kick me out for that? (I love beer though).
Thanks to any and all who respond. I decided to ask these things on Guru (as well as other places) because I generally enjoy the community here. Thanks again.

I am not Canadain but I know the answer to one of them.
4. No they will not kick you out for not liking hockey so long as you do not make fun of their hockey.
As for questions 1. and possibly 2 here is a link to the Department of Homeland Security that outlines traveling to Canada. Hopefully it will be a help.

1. You need a passport to cross the border. To live there, you'll prolly have to see the immigration board or something.
2. I have no idea.
3. Ask your girlfriend?
4. Football season is about to start
PS: Alberta = Mass polution, so I hate you now.

Well, back on topic - here's a link to Canada's Immigration webpage
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.html
And this link gives what you need to have and what you cannot bring. Included are phone numbers to check with Customs about personal belongings and Transport Canada about your vehicle http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/newcome...ection-02.html

1. As far as I know, they're not enforcing the passport thing until the beginning of next year. But I've also been told that the passport thing is more about people from here visiting the States. Like posted above, you'll probably have to have a chat with immigration and pass a drinking test.
2. I really honestly doubt it.
3. You could however look on the immigration web page. I'm sure they'll have a toll free number for people to call somewhere.
4. You don't care for hockey? But you like beer. Let me clear that up a little for you. What you so eloquently refer to as "beer" (that is made in the US) is NOT in fact beer. It is merely flavoured water. You will not be able to accurately describe what beer truly is until you sit down at a local Canadian pub and toss back a pint of pretty much anything we brew here. In fact if you ever come to Saskatoon, I can recommend a little pub that brews thier own beer. Then, once you've had a few of what you will come to refer to as "Super Beer" we'll discuss your dislike for hockey. In the back room.
Seriously tho, probably half the people here have no idea how hockey even works. Most of them claim to like hockey because it gives them a reason to scream at the tv when they're drunk. Sad part is, there's probably just as many people liking hockey as there are liking curling. Now that's a sport you can hate all you want. It's frickin giant frickin shuffleboard on frickin ice! wtf?

Thank you all for your input, especially you, Darcy. I'm really looking forward to it. LOL @ Jade... when I was in the Navy, I partied on a Canadian warship that was visiting Bravo Pier in San Diego (don't know if they still do, but they had their own bars onboard in the 80's).
So yeah, I've downed a few Canadian brews and I'm looking forward to more.
Hope the NASCAR scene is alive and well there! Thanks all!
